A Trip To The Dog Park is A Treat For Your Best Friend
You love your dog, you feed him right with Pedigree coupons, and you like to have fun together, Taking your pup to the dog park can be a great way for him to socialize and get exercise – but you need to make sure you follow these important guidelines, says Dr. Valli Parthasarathy, an animal behaviorist and veterinarian with Portland-based Synergy Behavior Solutions.
1) Go to the park sans pup the first time around. Get to know the layout of the park.
2) Monitor your dog all the time when you do bring him to the park, even when you’re talking with other dog owners.
3) Keep your dog leashed on the way to the park and on the way back. Unleash him only in designated areas.
4) Bring water and clean-up bags to pick up after your pooch.
5) Do not bring treats, and it’s best to avoid toys in the dog park. According to Dr. Parthasarathy, dogs can get jealous of each others ‘toys and when they see another dog getting a reward.
6) Make sure your pet’s vaccinations and medications are all up-to-date.
7) Don’t bring puppies younger than 4 months to the park. Socializing a young dog is good, but young dogs are especially susceptible to disease.
8) Keep an eye on your dog’s body language to see how he’s doing. If you see the whites of his eyes, a tucked tail, pulled back ears or bristly hair, you know he isn’t comfortable with the situation and it’s time to go.
9) Know that not all dogs are dog park dogs. If your dog doesn’t take to the park, you can go on hikes or play a game of fetch in the yard instead.
When you get home, you might need to give him a bath before you give him the food you bought Pedigree coupons -- but I bet he’ll be one happy dog!
