Taco Bell's clever ads have millions saying "Yo Quiero Taco Bell!"
Taco Bell serves tasty, cheap, and fast Mexican food at locations across the globe -- it's no surprise that it's one of the most popular fast food chains on earth. Since its founding in 1962, Taco Bell has also become famous for having some of the most original, hilarious, and memorable advertising, of any fast food chain. Of course, there are always great Taco Bell coupons available, but the company has enlisted an inventive advertising department to attract attention to their brand.
In March of 2001, for example, the company announced a promotion to capitalize on the prevalence of the Russian space station MIr in the news. Taco Bell set a huge target adrift in the Pacific Ocean and promised that, if a falling piece of the space station hit the raft, everyone in America would receive a free Taco Bell taco. They knew it was a risky move -- the put a big insurance policy on the gamble. But the target was not hit, and Taco Bell made headlines worldwide.
In 2007, Taco Bell began a "Steal a Base, Steal a Taco," promotion to coincide with the World Series. The promotion looked like its 2001 predecessor -- if any player in the World Series stole a base, everyone in America would receive a free taco. Taco Bell had to come through when Jacoby Ellsbury of the Boston Red Sox stole a base in Game 2. The company repeated the promotion in 2008, and gave out millions of free tacos when Jason Bartlett of the Tampa Bay Rays stole a base during the first game.
I think this is a great idea .... stolen bases always make a game more exciting, and this is a fun way for Taco Bell to encourage that.
Many localities have similar promotions -- in Colorado, when the Colorado Rockies advanced in the World Series playoffs, everyone in the state was entitled to a free taco.
But perhaps most famous of all was the late 1990s series of ads featuring a talking chihuahua whose catchphrase was "Yo Quiero Taco Bell." The chain sold millions of stuffed toy Taco Bell dogs, Taco Bell dog bobbleheads for car dashboards, t-shirts, coupons, and other items capitalizing on the dog's novel appeal. Sadly, Gidget, the dog actor who portrayed the chalupa-loving pop-culture sensation, died at the age of 15 in 2009.
Alongside these promotions, there have always been Taco Bell coupons that encourage people to drop by and try a taco, chalupa, or gordita. Now, more and more coupons are available online, so those aren't going anywhere. But I wonder what kind of crazy things the people at Taco Bell will come up with next?
