McDonald's Map of America
You may have heard the urban legend that in a big old city like New York or Boston you're never more than 20 feet away from a rat. It's virtually impossible to scientifically corroborate such claims, but there is a much more appetizing distance-related statistic that has been scientifically proven. Here's a hint: you're not likely to have trouble redeeming your McDonalds coupons.
That's right -- Steven von Worley of weathersealed.com has shown that, in the United States, you're rarely more than 15 minutes away from a McDonald's restaurant. He created a map of the United States where every McDonald's restaurant in the continental US is represented by a bright orange dot (see right), and discovered that there are few places your cravings for a Big Mac and fries can't be satisfied.
There are more than 13,000 individual McDonald's restaurants in the 50 states, the highest number of which are concentrated in the densely-populated eastern seaboard. The West coast also has a high concentration of McDonald's locations, but such outposts become increasingly few and far between in the region from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains.
South-east Oregon, Idaho and Nevada are especially deprived -- van Worley calls these areas "McSparse." von Worley has also used his map to locate the one point in the United States that is more geographically isolated from tasty fast food than any other -- an unnamed spot in the grasslands on South Dakota that lies between two tiny towns called Meadow and Glad Valley. From this spot, it's 107 miles to the nearest McFlurry as the crow flies, and farther if you have to stick to paved roads. From this spot, you'd have to drive 145 miles to get to McDonald's. You'd have to leave right after breakfast if you hoped to use a McDonalds coupon for lunch!
