Tampons get glam
Are you tired of using your tampon coupons to buy the same old dull, white tampons? Is the plain, clean surface of your maxipad bumming you out with its uninspiring blandness? While the sanitary whiteness of feminine products has never particularly bothered me, but Kimberly’Clark’s Kotex brand tampons seems to think that unadorned tampons are unacceptable.
Last March, the company introduced a range of products in vibrant colors and psychadelic patterns, and sales immediately jumped 7 percent. That’s a big gain in the feminine care market, where women tend to become loyal customers of a given brand and are reluctant to experiment with new products.
Kimberly-Clark’s design manager says the glam-ified tampons are part of a re-conceptualization of women’s menstrual cycles.
“The products have traditionally been institutional and clinical-looking,” said Kristi Bryant. The brand hopes that their new line of “Designer” tampons that come in such styles as “Poptimistic,” “Boho,” and “Punk Glam” inspire women to feel less dread and more excitement about their periods.
The company sponsored a pad-design contest earlier this year, and winning designs that feature peace signs and paisleys will hit store shelves in early 2012. It may seem a bit ridiculous to use tampon coupons to buy something pretty that you’re just going to bleed on, but apparently the Beiber set is eager to use tampon coupons on the new designs. Consider as evidence a recent comment on the Kotex site: “Yay! New pad designs! I’m excited! xD!” Alright, then.
