Don't Know Much About Diapers? Don't worry ...we'll fill you in!
Worry not, diaper-aisle newbies. These tips (from Consumer Reports) will help you navigate the world of disposable diapers like a pro. After you've read up on diaper-buying technique, all you'll need are free diaper coupons and you'll be ready to go!
Number One: Don't Go Nuts for Newborn Size.
That's right, diapers come in different sizes. You'll go through a load of diapers with a newborn baby, but unless you're having twins (or triplets, or octuplets!), it's not going to save you any money to invest in the economy pack of newborn-sized diapers. An economy pack can contain as many as 160 diapers! Even though a newborn needs his diaper changed every few hours, babies tend to grow so fast during the first weeks that they'll outgrow those itty-bitty diapers before you get to the bottom of the package. Some newborns are even born too big for the smallest size of diapers, so you might never need the newborn size. The tricky is to buy by your baby's weight. If your baby is on the smaller side -- less than 8 pounds -- newborn diapers are the way to go. Babies 8 pounds and bigger should start in a size 1.
More is better.
That said, once your baby is out of the newborn stage, your best bet to save money is to buy the largest package of diapers available. The price per diaper is considerably cheaper when you buy in bulk (as much as nine cents per diaper cheaper, and since most babies go through 4500 diapers before potty training, that adds up!). Generally, store-brand diapers are the most affordable option -- but if you scout for sales or use free diaper coupons, you can bring down the price of name-brand diapers significantly.
Don't buy 'em too big.
Pick the smallest diaper your baby can wear comfortably. Large diapers not only cost more, they may also make your baby uncomfortable because a too-big diaper can leak and chafe.
No two brands size the same way.
One brand's size one might be a good fit for babies 8-14 pounds, while another fits a baby as big as 18 pounds. Be a smart shopper and read the package before you load up on diapers to be sure you're getting the right size.
