Dog Walking Can Slim Your Waistline!
Looking to get a beach-body for summer? Don’t hit the gym, hit up your local humane society! Your intuition might tell you that a powerful exercise machine is a highly-engineered electrical contraption, but the most effective exercise equipment is actually powered by Kibbles n Bits coupons. That’s right – researchers have found that people who have dogs are more likely to exercise more often than their colleagues who don’t own dogs.
Many studies have shown that people are more likely to get out and go for a walk if they own a dog. One study even showed that elderly people are more likely to go for a walk with a canine companion than they are with a human one. That makes sense to me – who could turn down those big sad eyes begging for a walk?
But recent research out of Michigan State University shows that dog-owners aren’t just more likely to walk, they exercise more often than people who don’t have furry friends to encourage them.
The study’s lead author said that he and his team set out to answer a fairly obvious question – does dog-walking add significantly to the amount of exercise a person gets, or does it just replace exercise that person would have done elsewhere?
So the team conducted a study of 5900 Michigan residents, including 2,170 with dogs, to discern the exercise habits of people who did and did not care for pets. The findings were surprising, and encouraging. Dog-walkers had overall higher levels of moderate to vigorous physical activity than non dog-walkers, and most dog-walkers meet federal fitness guidelines.
Of course, the study found that just owning a dog isn’t necessarily enough to get you moving – there was a small percentage of dog-owners who said they did not walk their dogs – because they had too little time to do so themselves and hired a walker instead, because their dogs were too poorly behaved to walk on a lead, or because their dogs were too old to walk. If you fall into this group, you’re missing out on one of the best health benefits that owning a dog has to offer! That's like passing up on great Kibbles n Bits coupons for no reason -- it's silly to miss out when a good thing comes your way!
