Penske Moving Trucks Make Their Motion Picture Debut
I’m used to product placement in films – especially for stuff like soda in so-called popcorn movies. But I never though I would see a reason to use Penske coupons in a serious drama.
That’s exactly what the new movie “I Will Follow,” does, though – and it’s been getting a lot of buzz on the festival circuit.
The film was produced in less than two weeks with virtually no budget. It is based on the real-life story of television and movie publicist and documentarian Ava DuVernay, who tragically lost her aunt Denise to breast cancer.
The film follows a single day in the life of a woman named Maye as she moves out of the apartment she shared with her late aunt (that’s where Penske comes in—Penske moving trucks and boxes play prominently in Maye’s transition).
The movie was distributed in select cities by the African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement. It has received praise from CNN, the Los Angeles Times, and Roger Ebert. The film is set to be released on DVD this summer.
I haven’t seen the movie, but I really want to – producing an independent film is a labor of love that requires the filmmakers to stretch their resources and pour their hearts and souls into the project. I’m sure they used Penske coupons to get the trucks featured in the film on the cheap, but there’s no reward for all the hard work that goes into making a movie like having your film reach an appreciative audience.
