Grrrreat Deals on the Cereal that's more than good: Frosted Flakes!
If you travel to South Korea and get a sudden hankering for Frosted Flakes, no problem! Just remember that there, the cereal is called "Corn Frost." In Japan, the sweet and crunchy cereal is called Corn Frosties. In most of Europe and the Middle East, they just say they want a bowl of "Frosties," while people in Latin America buy "Zucaritas." Do you suppose Frosted Flakes coupons are valid for Corn Frosties, too?
But no matter where you go, or what the cereal is called, it will always be represented by Tony the Tiger. So you suppose that, in Mexican television ads, he says "Estan buuuuueeeno!"? I'll have to do a bit more research on that one.
In North America, Frosted Flakes have bested hundred of cereal brands to become the fourth most popular cereal in the United States, and Tony the Tiger has become famous in his own right (check out the Tony the Tiger tattoo below. I love Frosted Flakes, but I wouldn't get a tattoo for anything, never mind a breakfast cereal!)
Had history played out differently, the inked gentleman might have had a very different animal on his body, because Tony had to win his place as a popular cereal representative.
In 1952, when the Kellogg's brand introduced a new cereal called "Kellogg's Sugar Frosted Flakes of Corn" the company had a contest to determine who would be the face of the new breakfast. Cereal-lovers had the opportunity to vote for the character they liked best. In the running were Katy the Kangaroo, Elmo the Elephant, Newt the Gnu and Tony the Tiger. What the heck is a gnu? Maybe that's why poor Newt was so solidly defeated. The race was close in early months, so Katy and Tony shared the cereal box for a while. But after a long run-off Tony was officially declared the winner in 1953, and he got the box all to himself. The cereal box has been his turf for the past 58 years, which makes Tony one of the oldest cereal mascots around.
A man named Dallas McKennon voiced Tony the Tiger in the first commercials, but his voice was not naturally as low as the famous feline's and he found it very hard on his voice to keep imitating Tony, so Dallas quit. A man named Thurl Ravenscroft took his place. Thurl also did voices in Disney films, including Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, and The Lady and the Tramp. Thurl stayed at the job until his death at age 91. Professional wrestling announcer Lee Marshall is the current voice of Tony the Tiger. Each man has mastered the cereal's catchphrase "They're Grrrreeeeat!" which has had several variations and additions over the years, from "They bring out the tiger in you!" to "Earn your stripes!" If you agree with Tony that Frosted Flakes are more than good, you'll want to get your paws on these Frosted Flakes coupons.
