Woman Loses Job For Refusing To Wear Makeup
My mother always taught me to stand up for what I believe in, doing just that cost one 24-year-old department salesclerk her job. Melanie Stark claims that the famed retailer Harrod’s inappropriately tried to force her to use makeup coupons, and she resigned from her post of five years over the dispute.
Stark said that she didn’t wear makeup to her job interview when she was 19 and she hasn’t work makeup to work in her half decade as a Harrod’s employee. She says visiting senior managers came for a visit, saw that she wasn’t wearing cosmetics, and sent her home because she was in violation of the Harrod’s dress code.
The Harrod’s dress code, which is given to every employee (including Stark) at the beginning of employment states that all female employees should wear:
“Full makeup at all time: base, blusher, full eyes (not too heavy), lipstick, lip liner and gloss are worn at all time and maintained discreetly (please take into account the store display lighting which has a ‘washing out’ effect).”
Stark said that the managers eventually told her she could get by with eyeliner and lipstick only, but she opted to quit her job rather than being forced to use makeup coupons.
“I know what I look like with makeup. I have used it, though never at work. But I just could not see how, in this day and age, Harrods could take away my right to choose whether to wear it or not,” she explained. I understand that she may have an argument – but you have to wear the uniform your employer requires, and if you don’t want to, you have the right to find another job. What do y’all think – is Harrod’s out of line or is Miss Stark making much ado about nothing?
