Purina dog food coupons fuel your dog, but what do Iditarod dogs eat?
This weekend, hundreds of dogs will run hundreds of miles through the Alaskan wilderness in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. The annual event, which begins on the first weekend of march, covers 1,161 miles and takes 9-15 days to complete. The dogs run in teams of 16, and they work up an appetite that would require more than a few Purina dog food coupons to satisfy!
It has been estimated that the average sled dog can burn upwards of 10,000 calories a day during the race -- that's five times more than the average person eats in a day! That's too many calories to eat in one or two meals, and you can imagine how difficult it would be to run the Boston Marathon after consuming Thanksgiving dinner. So the Iditarod dogs eat many smaller meals throughout the day, and it's important that those meals have the proper balance of nutrients to keep the dogs healthy during their strenuous trip. This means a balance of protein, fiber, carbohydrates, and fat. Sled-dog food is usually high in fat because fat is more calorie-dense than other nutrients, and sled dogs burn through calories like crazy.
Every musher is responsible for calculating his or her dog food diet (it's part of the race strategy), but most feed their dogs a concoction of lamb, poultry skin, hamburger, corn oil, and the occasional moose or salmon steak in addition to vitamin and mineral supplements. The musher's goal is a food that packs 2500 calories per pound. To put that in perspective, the average Chipotle burrito weighs one pound and has 1,000 calories.
It would be impossible for a team of sled dogs to carry enough food to feed them for 18 days, so mushers make sure to have supplies stocked at each of the race's 18 checkpoints for refueling. It's really amazing what those dogs do, and really amazing how much they eat! for my little dog, a few miles is a long run - and she eats like a little pig! I'm so glad I don't have to feed a whole pack of sled dogs. All i need is a couple of Purina pet food coupons to keep my dog running.
