Can't Get Enough Lucky Charms?
As a kid, Lucky Charms was my absolute favorite cereal -- well, the marshmallows were, anyway -- I could take or leave the oat pieces (which are the part with actual nutritional value). In the spirit of nostalgia, I searched the internet and found a few facts about Lucky Charms that even the most avid cereal lovers don't know (the internet turns out to be good for lots of things besides facebook ... finding General Mills coupons, for example). Anyway, back to the cereal:
1.) You may know him as "Lucky" but the Lucky Charms leprechaun has also been referred to as L.C. Leprechaun and Sir Charms in marketing materials. He was created in the same year that the cereal was conceived -- 1963.
2.) Lucky Charms were invented because General Mills had an overabundance of Cheerios. The company put out a call for ideas about what to do with all the extra Cheerios, and a man named Paul Bunyon responded with the idea to add marshmallows to the cereal. His prototype was a mix of Cheerios and chopped up Kraft Circus Peanuts.
3.) Paul's original received only lukewarm reception from shoppers. General Mills decided to lightly frost the oat pieces with a hint of sugar and sales soared.
4.) The Lucky Charms marshmallows are colloquially referred to as Marbits by General Mills employees. The specially formulated tiny marshmallows were formulated by a man named John Holahan in 1963.
5.) In 1975, Lucky was briefly replaced by a wizard named Waldo. The unhappy public caused enough of a ruckus to have Lucky reinstated as the rightful representative of Lucky Charms.
Can't get enough marbits? You're in luck, because Cerealmarshmallows.com sells 7 oz. bags of nothing but marshmallows. If you're one of those people who likes the oat bits, there are plenty of General Mills coupons online for you.
