7 Strange Facts About the San Diego Zoo
The San Diego Zoo is home to the world's largest collection of animals -- more than 4,000 furry, scaly, feathered creatures representing more than 800 species call this zoo at home. If you weren't one of the 3.5 million people who visited the zoo last year, you'll definitely want to get some San Diego Zoo coupons and check it out. It's a one-of-a-kind adventure!
You might know the zoo for its world-famous panda habitat, or perhaps from the dramatic final scene of Will Ferrell's Anchorman. But I bet you don't know these weird facts about the famous zoological park:
1.) The zoo once housed a two-headed snake named Thelma and Louise. Though two-headed animals usually live less than a year in the wild, they do much better in captivity. Thelma and Louise lived at the zoo for years and had 15 normal, one-headed babies.
2.) The zoo once housed a rare white tiger. The big cat was smuggled into the USA from nearby Mexico and was previously owned by a racetrack in Tijuana, Mexico.
3.) The zoo is home to the largest number of New Guinea Singing Dogs in the world. There are more dogs in this pack (seven) than in any other location. These rare primitive canines are at risk of becoming endangered, but one of the Singing Dogs at the San Diego Zoo recently gave birth to four pups, which will help to preserve the species.
4.) In the 1980s, an orangutan named Ken Allen became famous for repeatedly escaping his supposedly escape-proof enclosure.
5.) The Zoo is the subject of a book called "Who Pooped in the Zoo?" an award-winning zoological fact bock for kids that contains a lot of scatological trivia, for example: did you know that storks poop on their legs to cool off? Or that squid-eating penguins have pink poop?
6.) The first ever YouTube video was shot in the Zoo and was uploaded by the site's co-creator Jawed Karim on April 23, 2005.
7.) Until the 1960s, admission for children was free, even if the child was not accompanied by a paying adult.
If these weird facts have piqued your interest in the San Diego Zoo, these San Diego Zoo coupons are for you! There's a ton more to learn and explore at the zoo.
