The Loooooooooooong History of Tampons
Well before there were tampon coupons, ancient people made their own tampons from natural materials. The earliest use of tampons has been attributed to the ancient Egyptians, who used softened papyrus to make disposable menstrual tampons. The ancient Greeks also made tampons, but they used lint wrapped around a small piece of wood. This method has been recorded in the writings of medical pioneer Hippocrates, who documented such tampons in the 5th century BC. Physicians in the Medieval Islamic world also recorded the use of tampons, though their writings indicate that these tampons were used primarily for contraceptive purposes. Archeologists have discovered that a variety of materials including paper, vegetable fibers, sponges, grass, and cotton have been used to make tampons throughout the course of human history.
Tampons have also been used for medical purposes – in the 19th century, antiseptic cotton tampons were used to stop the bleeding caused by bullet wounds. There have been reports of soldiers using tampons for the same purpose while fighting the modern-day Iraq War.
The tampon as we know it today – with an applicator and removal cord – was first invented in 1929 by Dr. Earle Haas. The design was patented in 1931. Dr. Hass, who lived and worked in Denver, Colorado, sold his invention to a woman named Gertrude Tendrich, who would go on to create the Tampax Company.
Dr. Judith Esser-Mittag, a gynecologist, created tampons that could be inserted without an applicator. This type of tampon is called a digital tampon, and it became a bestseller under the name brand name O.B. after the design was sold to Johnson and Johnson in 1974. OB tampons are now among the dozens of brands available with tampon coupons today.
