The 'Snap! Crackle! Pop!' Translation Guide
Rice Krispies cereal will turn 83 this year -- a celebration that definitely calls for Rice Krispies treats (and save on those treats: use these Rice Krispies coupons)! The cereal became an almost instant sensation around the world when it debuted in 1928, and it has remained one of the most popular cereals in the world for more than eight decades. The cereal goes by the name "Rice Krispies" in almost every country, except Australia and New Zealand, where families shop for "Rice Bubbles" instead of "Krispies!"
Snap, Crackle, and Pop, the cereal's cartoon gnome mascots, debuted in the 1930s. Based on the hats worn by the characters, people have speculated that Snap is a baker and Pop is a soldier. Crackle's striped hat makes his job a little it more ambiguous -- what do you suppose his job is? The Kellogg company has said that the three are brothers; Snap is the oldest and is good at problem-solving, Crackle is the middle child, and Pop is the mischievous kid brother.
The three brotherly gnomes have been the cereal's representatives since they made their debut more than 75 years ago, and they appear on cereal boxes around the world. But not everyone knows them as Snap, Crackle, and Pop -- the onomatopoetic noises of the cereal are different in every language, and o the characters' names are, too. Check out these international takes on the Rice Krispies sound:
