DEODORANT COUPONS: A Recent innovation in deodorant development
Queen Elizabeth once boasted that she took a bath once a month "whether I need it of not," which made her excessively clean by the standards of her day. Attending a ball in her castle must have been a rather stinky affair. I'll never be able to look at a painting of a medieval royal without wondering about their hygiene ... thank goodness we have higher standards today!
Before the invention of deodorants (and the availability of deodorant coupons), people often wore large amounts of perfume, and some women wore sachets of herbs or potpourri so they would always smell lovely.
It wasn't until the late 1800s that the first commercial deodorant was invented in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Deodorant innovation then stalled until 1941, when Jules Montenier patented a type of antiperspirant called Stopette. It was a best-seller until its patent expired in the 1950s. In the late 1940s, roll-on deodorant was born when a clever guy named Edward Gelsthorpe hd the idea to develop a deodorant applicator based on a then-new invention: the ball-point pen.In the 1960s, Gilette introduced aerosol deodorants to the market and they became an immediate hit. Half of all deodorants sold in the US by the late 1960s were aerosols, and by the 1970s more than 80 percent of deodorants were sold in aerosol form. The aerosol bubble burst with the arrival of the 80s; researchers found that the chemicals used in aerosol sprays con contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer. Of course, by this time, people were accustomed to nice-smelling coworkers. Rather than throwing out the deodorant idea altogether, scientists invented effective deodorants in stick form, which are the most popular types of deodorant today.
There are, however, other technologies to control odor and perspiration that modern science has introduced. Did you know Botox makes a great antiperspirant? The catch is that, for it to work, you have to have it injected into your armpits (ouch!) and the effects last for only six months. The procedure also tends to be expensive. I'm all for innovation, but I'll stick to deodorant: it's easy to use, inexpensive (even more so with deodorant coupons) and there are no needles involved.
