I've heard of a pet sematary .. but a pet morgue?
Calgary, Alberta is setting up an unusual institution to help bereaved pet owners. They city has set up a pet morgue to keep the remains of dogs and cats killed on the city’s streets where those remains can be identified by pet owners.
As an animal lover and pet food coupon user, the idea of a pet morgue is something that makes me really upset – I can’t imagine having to go identify my beloved dog at the morgue. But I can also see how this could be a valuable service.
City officials in Calgary report that last year they collected the remains of 483 cats and 46 dogs from city streets, and that so far this year there have been 232 cats and 24 dogs killed on city streets. The new program establishes a morgue at the city’s Animal Services center where pet remains will be kept for up to ten days while workers search for license tags, microchips, or other markers that would allow the city to notify the pet’s owners.
"When you talk to the pet owner, even when they find out that their pet has been located but unfortunately it's deceased, it's a very emotional moment," said Bill Bruce, director of Calgary’s Animal and Bylaw Services. "People want to know whether it's time to close the book on that relationship and move forward or do they just sit there hoping, and hoping and hoping they'll find their pet again? Nobody wants to hear the bad news, but we do want to know."
Bruce explained that owners will be contacted and given a choice to have the animal cremated by the city to to arrange private burial. Bruce also said that those concerned about the city’s bottom line can rest easy, because the program will not require extra money. I can’t decide how I feel about this whole idea, so I want to ask what other pet food coupons users think – is the pet morgue a great service for the bereaved or a morbid way to deal with a problem?
