Grape-Nuts Are Weirdly Named & Weirdly Delicious
I have never really understood what's going on with Grape-Nuts. There are neither grapes nor nuts in there. But it's actually pretty tasty stuff. So, while munching on a bowl of Grape-Nuts the other day, I decided to research my favorite cereal. Yes, I confess -- I googled my breakfast. But I found great Post cereal coupons and learned a lot!
Post employees have claimed that the cereal takes its name from its resemblance to grape seeds -- grape "nuts", so to speak. Makes sense, right? When C.W. Post invented the cereal in 1897, he mixed together a batter of barley and wheat to make a batter which he baked in sheets. He then broke the sheets into pieces and ran them through a coffee grinder, which gave the cereal its unique texture.
I also learned that Grape-Nuts helped fuel the Allies in WWII -- because the cereal is lightweight, compact, and stays fresh, it makes an excellent ration for soldiers on extended missions. These same qualities made the cereal a popular food with explorers and expedition groups in the 1920s and 30s.
In parts of New England and Canada, Grape-Nuts ice cream is a popular treat. The unlikely combination came about in 1919 when a chef ran out of fruit to mix-in to her ice cream and tossed in cereal instead. I'm actually quite tempted to try this recipe myself when the whether warms up -- it's be like having the cone mixed right in to the ice cream!
C.W. Post, the gentleman who was such an innovator of cereal, is also credited with orchestrating the first mass advertising campaign to use coupons. The first Post cereal coupons were good for one penny off a box of Grape-Nuts, which Post hoped would inspire people to try his product.
